1988 |
- First to introduce polyurethane midsoles in hiking boots to reduce weight and improve
cushioning, resulting in the classic Moraine backpacking boot.

- Launched first trail and light hiking shoes on TerrraFlex platform; this new concept
put . midsole cushioning next to the foot and a protective plate between the midsole
and outsole.

- Launch of the Vitesse technical trail running shoe. The original design is still

- Montrail patents the use of stretchable GORE-TEX® in the Java GTX shoe.

2000 |
- Developed Fit Center for retailers, including a fit bench with an integrated rubbing
bar and a detailed Technical Manual to promote in-store fitting and service.

- Developed first ‘soft shell’ shoe, made with Schoeller® fabric.

2003 |
- Introduced first integrated boot, gaiter and crampon system for ice climbing. The
interface between the boot and crampon is patented in the U.S. Also, a two-part
camp bootie, the Bivouac, is the first of its kind.
- Launch of Susitna XCR, the first shoe featuring GORE-TEX® in the outermost layer.
Montrail co-developed the shoe with W.L. Gore and Associates.
- Awarded Backpacker Magazine’s Editor’s Choice for the Excelerace XCR.
- D7 earns Editor’s Choice in Climbing Magazine’s review of approach shoes.

- Montrail enters rock climbing market with five models featuring ultra-sticky Gryptonite
rubber.

2005 |
- Innovative PRFRM thermo-moldable foam introduced in three products. The Molokai,
the first custom moldable flip flop on the market; the Method, a new standard for
comfort in rock climbing shoes; and Endurosoles, custom moldable insoles. Montrail
has a patent pending for the process by which moldable foam can be manufactured
into footwear.
- Gryptonite rubber extended to trail running and multi-sport shoes.
- Montrail collects several awards and top picks for its products in Health (Hardrock),
Outside (Hardrock), Hooked on the Outdoors (Highline), and Backpacker (Stratos XCR).
